Caroline's Story

I have been passionate about pregnancy and birth for as long as I can possibly remember. As an undergraduate at Colby College, I spent a semester abroad in rural Nepal. After graduating with my degree in Womens’ Studies, I traveled solo throughout Southeast Asia for a year where I further studied and heightened my knowledge of birthing practices outside of the United States. Upon my return, I realized what a beautiful, natural, and empowering event giving birth could be, and I wanted to help facilitate that for women here. I had felt passionate about women , babies and birth for so long, that I finally decided it was time to take action.

I joined renowned activist Suzanne Arms, in Southwestern Colorado to help her turn her already established organization, “Birthing the Future”, into a non-profit. Working along Suzanne who has been at the forefront of the international birthing movement for decades, was incredibly eye-opening. I felt a calling to get involved on a personal level, so became certified as a Birth Doula through ALACE in 2003 and Immediately began attending births in Durango, Colorado which I continued to do for the next few years.

To this day, I can honestly say that there is nothing I would rather do than help assist a woman (and her partner) to welcome their child into the world. Based on my experience assisting many laboring and birthing women as well as on my own experience of giving birth, I firmly believe that if a woman is supported in a way that allows her to realize her immense strength, power and courage, then this empowerment will carry over to her mothering.

"There is power that comes to women when they give birth. They don't ask for it, it simply invades them. Accumulates like clouds on the horizon and passes through, carrying the child with it." - Sheryl Feldman
